Things to Consider Before Buying a Dog

A dog is a man's best friend and not without reason; the bond between man and dog has been a strong and special one since ages. Millions of pet enthusiasts across the world prefer dogs over other pets. If you too feel that a dog is the right pet for you, then you should definitely get one soon. But before you go about buying a dog, there are certain things you should know. Owning a dog is an important responsibility and you should be well prepared to take it on. The pointers below should help you on your way towards becoming a dog owner. Select a breed that matches your temperament and lifestyle. A big outdoors dog is ideal for people with an active lifestyle, while a small indoors dog is suited for those who prefer to spend their time in front of the telly. Buy a dog that suits your home. If you live in a large mansion with big grounds, you can safely pick a dog like a Golden Retriever that needs lots of space. If however, you have a two-bedroom apartment, you might prefer a Chihuahua. Buy your dog from a breeder who has a reputation for being responsible and is known for purebreds. This ensures that you get a healthy dog with all the special characteristics of its breed. Ask lot of questions to the breeder. A good breeder will always answer all your questions enthusiastically and ask you good number of questions in return. Prepare yourself mentally; a dog is going to demand your attention and time and you should be ready to make changes to your schedule and lifestyle for this. Start your preparations in advance by making those changes and go out to buy a dog only when you feel you are ready to take on the added responsibility. The lifestyle of the dog you select should also match your work schedule. A dog like the Bearded Collie that needs daily care would not match your expectations if you have a hectic work life. If however, you lead a relaxed, laid back life, then a Basset would make a great companion for you. Decide on the amount of money you wish to spend on a new dog and look for dogs that meet your budget. Keep your budget in mind, but don't go around looking for bargains. A new dog will soon be a family member and you can never bargain on the price of family. Plus, bargain dogs are more likely to be mix breeds than properly priced ones. Keep in mind that buying a dog is not the only cost you will incur. A dog needs lot of care, right from proper food to grooming and veterinary care. These will involve not just monetary investment but also time. Train yourself on training your dog. If you feel it might be a task, find a good trainer in your area. Last but not the least, check with your neighbours if they are ok with a dog in the neighbourhood. You might buy a dog only to discover that your neighbours are not comfortable with it and you have to return it to the breeder.
