Is a yard required? Does not sound right, the main reason is that dogs have a sophisticated intelligence including an unparalleled social behavior that is most important to their interaction with humans. Your dog wants to be with you, let him out in the yard; he will soon be barking at the door.
As a foot note dogs are often called pack-animals, this is not correct it does not mean that he is an animal of pack but that he could carry a back load or pack, like a mule does.

Theobromine, a component of chocolate, is the toxic compound in chocolate.
Theobromine and Caffeine are members of a drug class called Methylxanines.
